AI for small business — straight answers

The questions we hear most, answered plainly. If AI isn't the right call for you, this is where we say so.

How much does an AI MVP cost?

Most small-business AI MVPs land in the low five figures. The number is driven by scope, not by the word "AI." We build the one workflow or decision that actually matters and stop there, rather than a sprawling platform you'll pay to maintain.

What moves the price: how many distinct user flows there are, whether we're integrating with systems you already run, and how much data preparation the model needs. What doesn't move it much: the model itself — modern APIs are cheap per call. A short discovery call gets you a concrete range for your specific idea before you commit to anything.

Does my small business need AI?

Often the honest answer is "not yet" — and we'll tell you so. AI earns its place when you have a repetitive, judgment-light task eating real hours, or a decision that better structure would measurably improve.

If your bottleneck is really a broken process, a missing integration, or a spreadsheet that needs to become a database, adding AI just puts a smart layer on a shaky foundation. We'd rather fix the foundation — or tell you to — than sell you a model you don't need.

AI consultant vs. building in-house?

Hire in-house when AI is core to your product and needs continuous ownership. Bring in a fractional team when you have a first product to ship or a bounded problem to solve.

A fractional partner gets you senior delivery in weeks instead of a months-long hiring cycle, and you don't carry a permanent salary if the work is seasonal or one-off. Critically, you keep the code and the knowledge — good consulting hands off cleanly, so you can take it in-house later if the work grows.

What is responsible AI implementation?

Responsible AI implementation is a set of engineering decisions you can verify — not a values statement. In practice it means a human stays the decision-maker on anything consequential, data is handled with care, failure modes are designed for, and the system says "I don't know" instead of guessing.

It's the difference between an AI that structures a decision so a person can make it well, and one that quietly makes the decision for them. We build the first kind — it's why the Decide app never chooses for the user, only clarifies the choice.

What does a fractional CTO do?

A fractional CTO gives you senior technical leadership part-time. That covers architecture and technical strategy, build-vs-buy calls, hiring and guiding engineers, and owning delivery — without the cost of a full-time executive.

It suits startups and small businesses that need the judgment but not, yet, the headcount. It's also the exact problem our own product, VantageCTO, is built to support.
